We don’t call ourselves as a technology and Internet giant. But if we go by the average internet speed available to consumers in the country we must be among the most backward nations in the world.

Ever heard the name of Lithuania or Romania? The two nations are among the top 10 nations when it comes to highest Internet speed in the world. On the other hand India seems a laggard.

Apple's Developer Website Hacked

Apple has not mentioned any detail on when exactly will it reopen for the developers, and has stated that "we expect to have the developer website up again soon."

Apple has sent out emails to  developers informing them that its developer website was attacked by an outsider last week, AllThingsD reports. The company has stated in the mail that it was due to an intruder’s intervention that it had to shut its developer’s website. On the safety front, Apple has claimed that since the database and information regarding developer’s sensitive personal details had been saved in an encrypted format, these could not be misused by the intruder. Though, it has also mentioned that the attacker might have been able to access developers name, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses.

Apple’s developer site had been shut since Thursday and it had initially said it was down for maintenance, only now revealing the real cause. According to the note sent to developers, the website will remain shut for security reasons, and will be unavailable until the company hardens the security and provides a better safety system. The note also includes that they are “completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server software, and rebuilding our entire database.”

Apple has not mentioned any detail on when exactly will it reopen for the developers, and has stated that “we expect to have the developer website up again soon.”

The website is updated now, and is reopened for users.

The Apple developer site can be used by developers to get access to iOS 7, OS X Mavericks and other software development kits. It also guides developers in putting their apps to beta testers, and comes with developer-only forums.

Last Thursday, an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers from our developer website. Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed, however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers’ names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed. In the spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue. We took the site down immediately on Thursday and have been working around the clock since then.

In order to prevent a security threat like this from happening again, we’re completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server software, and rebuilding our entire database. We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the developer website up again soon.

Recommendations for Investing in Gold

You can invest in gold through 3 methods: 

1. E-Gold,
2. Gold mutual funds,
3. Gold ETFs or gold bars and coins.

Do not forget, many Indians buy gold jewelry that they will never use considering them as investment. Each of these has their own advantages and disadvantages.

E-Gold

Advantages:

1. No recurring charges like expense ratio of mutual funds, ETFs involved.
2. Units as small as 1 gram can be redeemed for physical gold.
3. Greater price transparency.

Disadvantages:

1. Separate trading account and demat account needed for trading in e-gold.
2. Not the best way to invest in terms of tax. It treated as physical gold for taxation.
3. Newly launched product in India. Commodity exchanges are not well regulated like stock exchanges.

* Gold ETFs

Advantages:

1. Units are backed by corresponding units of physical gold which are kept in secured vaults.
2. Returns close to that of e-gold.
3. Long term capital gains tax of 10% without indexation or 20% with indexation kicks in after 1 year. No wealth tax applies.

 Disadvantage: 

1. Trading account and demat account needed for buying ETFs.

* Gold mutual fund

Advantages:

1. Through Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) of gold mutual funds one can affordably have disciplined investment in gold. One can invest as little as Rs 100 every month in gold funds.
2. Long term capital gains tax of 10% without indexation or 20% with indexation applies after 1 year. No wealth tax applies.

 Disadvantages: 

1. Expense ratio is higher than in gold ETFs.
2. Returns slightly lower than that of gold ETFs depending on fund’s performance.

* Physical gold

Advantages:

1. Banks charge premium is charged on gold bars and coins. Reselling them is difficult.
2. Storage costs and making charges involved. Issue of safety is also large.
3. Most unfavourable way in terms of tax. Long term capital gains tax of 20% with indexation applies only after 3 years of buying it. It attracts wealth tax.

Conclusion: If you own a demat account gold ETFs are the best form of gold investment for you. If you dont, choose gold mutual funds. E-Gold needs time to mature as a product and the separate account requirements are too demanding for those not accustomed to trading. While jewelry has value as consumption article, gold bars and coins should be avoided.
